General
Regular mechanical maintenance and monitoring will promote operating efficiency of the Glasgow WTP. Equipment must be in good working order for the system to maintain peak performance. A sudden and unexpected breakdown of equipment can cause problems throughout the entire treatment process. These types of problems can be minimized by following a regular maintenance program.
The American Water Works Association (AWWA) periodically publishes operations and maintenance guidelines which can be purchased online. A good publication for the operator to review is Water Treatment Plant Operation: A Field Study Training Program, 6th ed., Volumes 1 (2008) and Volume 2 (2015) published by the Office of Water Programs, California State University, Sacramento, CA. The books are designed to train operators in the safe and effective operation and maintenance of water treatment plants. Volume I emphasizes the knowledge and skills needed by an operator working in a conventional water treatment plant used for treating surface waters while Volume II provides information needed by all operators responsible for the administration and management of a water treatment plant.
This portion of the Manual is designed to assist the operating personnel in developing a maintenance management program. Inspections and maintenance are based on recommendations by experienced engineers and operators, maintenance guides of equipment manufacturers, and standard tests. It may be necessary, however, to adapt or modify these instructions to suit conditions at the Glasgow WTP. Any necessary changes in the suggested maintenance schedules provided in this Manual should be based on a review of local operating conditions and the experience of the plant operators. It would also be prudent to consult with the design engineer and the equipment manufacturers prior to instituting any major change in maintenance.
