General
Water treatment plants contain numerous potential safety hazards. This chapter addresses plant safety hazards and offers preventative measures to reduce hazards. It is strongly recommended that the Plant Superintendent develop a formalized safety program including annual training to help promote safety-conscious plant staff. Safety-conscious plant staff will reduce the potential for accidents. A brief posted statement of safety policy will help remind personnel of the importance of safety-conscious operation.
A comprehensive discussion of safety at water treatment plants is provided in a publication by the American Water Works Association (AWWA) titled Safety Practices for Water Utilities (AWWA No. M3). It is recommended that this publication be obtained from AWWA, read by all plant personnel, and kept on hand as a reference. In-plant safety memoranda and notices should be posted, distributed to all applicable plant personnel, and kept on file for reference.
